During my first vintage at Quivira Vineyards, I was handed near perfect conditions under which to harvest our Zinfandel. Very even and mild weather allowed me to take the necessary time to observe the various sub-blocks within each vineyard and pick each at its desired maturity. From seven vineyards we harvested and fermented 24 different lots of Zinfandel as well as several complementary lots of Carignane and Petite Sirah. I went back and forth over the final blend for months, knowing that as our standard bearer, this wine would be under close scrutiny to show just what my interpretation of this mercurial variety was. Thats a lot of pressure for one wine to live up to. But at the end of the day I find that if you blend one really good wine with another really good wine, you tend to end up with. . . a really good wine. So it is here, briar and bramble fruit with that telling nose of plum and black pepper that I associate so closely with Dry Creek Valley. The wine is fully ripe, but never veers toward jammy or pruney flavors. All in all, quite a bit of flavor and richness while staying light on its feet. At its best, Zinfandel can be a very compelling wine, but I feel that its casual nature is one of its most appealing traits.Simple grilled meats, braised or stewed dishes will prove to be quite happy in its company.
